The assessments that I perform are usually aimed at understanding psychological disturbance relating to neurological and / or psychiatric disorders, in order to answer referral questions and to provide support, psycho-education, and recommendations.
Neuropsychological assessments
Neuropsychological assessments are specialised evaluations focussed on understanding psychological disturbances relating to neurological conditions, such as brain injury, stroke, and neurodegenerative disorders. These evaluations typically involve the administration of tests designed to assess neurocognitive functions, such as attention, memory, language, visuospatial functions, mental processing speed, and executive functions. However, they also involve detailed interviews aimed at understanding the development of the difficulties, as well as associated emotional, motivational, personality, and behavioural changes.
These assessments are useful for diagnosing neurological disorders, tracking disease progression, and informing treatment plans. They can also be used to assess a person's ability to return to work or school following a neurological incident. Furthermore, attorneys and insurance companies often require them to assist in understanding the impact of personal injury.
The length of an assessment varies depending on the complexity of the case and the depth of information required, and can take anywhere from 2 to 5 hours.
Clinical psychological assessments
In many cases, neuropathology is not suspected, but a client is struggling with difficulties that are primarily emotional in nature. Clinical psychological assessment allows for a detailed exploration of these difficulties and their origin. Such assessments can be useful in the context of psycho-legal or insurance matters, but can also assist individuals by providing insight and informing treatment plans.
